Provided is an efficient method for generating iPS cells, comprising the steps of: (i) culturing a population of somatic cells introduced with reprogramming factors; (ii) selecting cells expressing the ESRG gene from the cultured cell population; and (iii) obtaining iPS cells by culturing the selected cells. The invention was made based on the finding that the ESRG gene is expressed at the very early stage (Day 3) of reprogramming beore the expression of TRA-1-60.
